Wing it till you make it!

Wing it

~to do or try to do something without much practice or preparation

Clearly, that is not the first time you're hearing that statement, is it?

My first time was about 5months ago when my current boss repeatedly said “You’re a professional at winging it. Do your thing.”. At first I really didn't know how to respond. When he said it the next time, I naively asked, What does that mean?

I had been winging it the whole time and I had not even noticed that I was until he said “That is why I offered you the job.”

I was mind blown.

As a young generation, our desire to be given a chance or a platform in making a difference in the world or adding value in society is clearly evident but most times we lack the skill set to actually match up the criteria to compete for opportunities.

Take an example of a country like Uganda, a 23 year old male youth has dreams to become a lawyer someday. The schools he attended, family background, environment that influences his perspective about life, etc. All these determine whether he will actually come out of his own head to step out and compete for equal opportunities as the experienced individuals.

Most times I sit back and wonder where I'd be if I hadn't “winged” my way in life. It's the belief that if given a chance, I would prove worthy because that is how much I want it. The pressure that comes with holding onto the only opportunity presented to you so that you don’t blow it is the reason winging works. It sets you apart from someone else who is most likely to take things for granted.

Not to sound like a motivational speaker but self belief and confidence is very key while winging it in life. It is showing up for interviews or in rooms that you clearly know you don't fit in. To have the discipline to come through in case someone takes a chance on you is what makes an individual distinct.

It goes without saying that while you're winging it, grow at it, acquire more skills, and take free online courses if you can or must. Improve your craft each day, that's how you become an asset.

So go apply for that job, join that big team, raise your hand and share that half baked idea you’ve always had on your mind, just take a risk on yourself. It has gotten me in rooms I am not well equipped to sit in but well, look who’s still here!
